Over recent decades, farmers markets have continued to flourish and grow in popularity across the country for many reasons. Here are just a few reasons why we are so excited to announce the start of the
Luna Pier Farmers Market:
Eating Healthy – Easy access to nutritious and natural alternatives to some of the highly processed foods containing pesticides, hormones, antibiotics and genetic modifications can help you maintain a healthier diet.
Eating Fresh – Produce found at the grocery store can take several days to reach the shelf, while farmers market produce might be picked that morning.
Eating Seasonally – They say variety is the spice of life, and that is certainly true in this case, as eating produce as it becomes locally in season is a great way of spicing up your meal routine with fresh and unique produce options.
Saving Time & Money – Why drive all the way to the grocery store, park a mile away, then wait in lines just to pay an arm and a leg for organic produce when you can get fresh local produce so close to home?
Helping Protect the Environment – Mass produced food in the U.S. travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to your plate, using vast amounts of non-renewable resources during production, packaging and transport along its journey.
Supporting the Local Economy – In today’s global marketplace, a large share of our family budget makes its way from our pockets, into the Mega-Mart cash register and ends up in a corporate bank account. That is simply not necessary for so many fresh produce and handmade items. The benefits of shopping local are many, but supporting the livelihood of those in your community is something that benefits us all.
Connecting with our Community – The Luna Pier Farmers Market will be a great place to enjoy the company of friends and neighbors, meet new people in the community and get outside and enjoy our lovely little lakeside city.
The Luna Pier Farmers Market is truly an event organized BY the people and FOR the people of Luna Pier. It has a committee made up of resident volunteers who have found the formation of this market to be a laborious yet fulfilling task. We welcome the contributions of anyone who has an interest in making this effort a success. At this time the committee is seeking to expand its crew of volunteers primarily for market days but also general planning and operations. We are still accepting applications for interested vendors of fresh produce, goods, and handmade crafts. Last but not least, donations are being accepted to help fill the gap in funding for the initial start-up costs associated with creation of the new market. If you have any questions or are interested in supporting the market in any way, please send an email to:
